The Czech government arranged to buy a complete production line for the Gew 98, parts on hand, and all work in progress. The great Mauser works at Oberendorf could no longer sell military rifles or pistols to Germany or any other country as a result of Allied occupation and the peace treaty imposed by the victorious powers of WWI. The serial number 18770 does not have any alpha characters or markings around the receiver ring area. Lion 38 would mean it was accepted by the Czech army in 1938, the mark should be on the right side of the receiver as you sight down the rifle near the wood line, there may also be the same mark on the underside of the barrel for when the barrel was accepted. If it was used be the Czech army you will find a small rampant lion proof mark with the year of acceptance by the Czech army example. Most of the Romanian vz will have a letter followed by a R as a prefix in the serial number, if it has the large 'winter ' trigger guard it will be Czech post war production made from left over German occupation parts when they made them for the Nazi, you may even be able to find the remains of Nazi acceptance stamps.
